It’s been a while

Well it’s been a while since I have entered a post so here’s the update. My goal when I last wrote was to complete Boston in under 3 hours. I did accomplish my goal and got a PR as well. I wrote a full race report which I will post soon.

Now my new goal is the Chicago marathon this fall. I am setting a goal which probably the hardest goal I’ve ever set. The bar is real high on this one. I am going to try for elite status at the USATF National Masters Championship marathon. That means I will need to run a marathon under 2:40. There it’s out, I said it, it’s official. Now comes the hard part…the training. I decided to use a different training plan for this race. I guess I figure if I’m going to try to get that much faster I need to do something drastic. Up until now I’ve used Hal Higdon’s Advanced II marathon training plan with great success. The other part of the plan is to drop some weight. Maybe 8 pounds or so.

The new training plan has a lot more miles per week and longer runs. In fact, I will we running 3 runs over the marathon distance with one being 30 miles. I think this will work for me, I’m not sure. We’ll see what happens. I need to shave 7 minutes off of my Boston time.

I plan to update this blog with my workouts from the beginning of the plan all the way through. Hopefully I can keep it up. I’m already 3 weeks in, so I will have to enter the earlier workouts in a summary post.

Race Report - Delavan Half Marathon

Well, I decided to race today to replace my training run. It was a long drive, but worth it. I ended up getting a PR which is a good sign for Boston. Look out Lance. It was a great workout.

The race itself was great for a small local race. The coarse was certofied, the volunteers were great, very knowledgable and friendly. The race was organized and on time. The coarse itself was very well marked with each mile and turn clearly labelled. I always new my pace and there was absolutely no way to make a wrong turn. The shirt was a tech shirt and very nice. If I have a criticism of the race it would be that there was not a masters award. The facility was nice too. The registration, awards and food were all held in the highschool. Nice and warm. Plenty of bathrooms and even access to the locker room with showers. The food was great as well. Definately a thumbs up.

The coarse was a little hilly, but just gentle rollers, nothing to talk about. It wasn’t very scenic, mostly farm fields, but not many turns and some nice long straights. Great coarse for a PR. I would definately go back.

    Help. I need new music.

I always workout with my iPod when I’m by myself. I’m even going to try swimming with it. I listen to podcasts, books on tape (or should I say books on mp3), and music. I have some really long runs comming up and I need some suggestions for some new music. Please help. If you have any suggestions - I’m all ears or eyes or whatever.

    Race Stats

I found a great Web Site for tracking race results. Check it out:

    Here’s mine: http://www.athlinks.com/myResults.aspx

Search your name and see what comes up. You may want to try a few variations to your name and merge them. It’s easy to do, you’ll see.
